Can Food Be Healthy And Tasty?
Can food be healthy and tasty?
The simple answer? Yes!
Fundamentally, I believe there is a huge misunderstanding that healthy means plain and dull for the tastebuds.
This most likely started back when bodybuilding became popular in the 1950s and 1960s, where it was (and still is) common for competitors to eat a typical diet of broccoli, chicken, vegetables, and rice.
Thankfully, things have changed: flavours from all corners of the globe have swept into almost every nation, meaning that we can walk into almost any shop and find seasoning, spices, and herbs from a very wide variety of sources.
This means that with minimal effort, we can transform the boring into brilliant.
Adding a dash of paprika or cumin to the rice, letting the chicken marinate in a smoky BBQ dry rub, and having the vegetables steamed with a squeeze of lemon juice really makes the taste buds tingle.
What is key to remember is that most food comes with its own taste, and this can become very familiar all too soon. Don’t let a lack of curiosity and playfulness in the kitchen leave you miserable at mealtime.
Use what you already know and apply it to the new foods you try out.
Do some research into the flavours that pair well with your chosen foods.
Or if you’re feeling like a pro, go with the flavour and/or smell as you’re cooking.
With the ability to throw some ingredients into the slow cooker and leave it on low while you’re out during the day, it’s never been easier to get a home-cooked and nutritious meal on the go.
Take your time and remember that with seasoning, you can always add more, but it can be difficult to remove it.
Experiment with various ideas and draw inspiration from cookbooks, online recipes, or cultures you have experienced before. Some of the tastiest dishes I’ve created were inspired by others—this approach removes 95% of the hassle!
Plan out what you want to make, gather the ingredients, and throw on some fun music while you’re having a go.
